Hanoi is seeking public feedback on plans to reshape the Hoan Kiem Lake area, including an idea for a structure called Khai hoan mon, or triumphal arch, north of the lake. Consultation runs from September 7 to 26 and covers a study area of around 66 hectares in Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards.
The proposed monument forms part of a broader expansion of public space connecting the lake with the Opera House and August Revolution Square. Debate therefore concerns both a new structure's design and the organisation of the landscape around a historic symbol of Hanoi.
Architect Ho Thieu Tri argues that the idea should be assessed within the plan's wider axis and network of squares. He believes a new architectural landmark could continue the city's history if appropriately integrated. Professor Bui Xuan Dinh questions whether such a monument is needed beside the lake, where traditional buildings are relatively small and closely related to the water.
The researcher suggests considering restoration of the historic city gates as another way to commemorate Hanoi's past. The differing views leave questions about location, meaning and harmony open for discussion. The plan is under consultation; it is not an announcement that construction of the monument has been approved.
