How the pieces fit

Helguera argued that physically strong players do not automatically replace the organising qualities once provided by Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. He praised Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga while questioning whether the squad contains the right combination of attributes. He highlighted Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham's attacking instincts and the burden that can leave behind them. Moving Valverde to the right and adding a midfielder was his suggested solution, rather than an agreed selection or transfer plan. He also favoured combining possession with effective counterattacking.

Lessons from earlier teams

Recalling his own Madrid career, Helguera separated the spectacle associated with Zidane and Ronaldo from the demands of collective success. He remembered frank dressing-room discussions involving Hierro, Raul, Redondo and Sanchis before the Galacticos period, contrasting that shared purpose with a later emphasis on individual interests. For him, leadership requires setting an example and putting the group first. He also advocated opportunities for Spanish players and academy graduates. These are recollections and recommendations from a former player who served Madrid between 1999 and 2007. The accompanying Reuters photograph shows him against Juventus on 22 February 2005, rather than at the new interview.
