V.League here means V.League 1, the top division of Vietnamese men’s national club football. It is distinct from V.League 2, the First Division. Clubs compete in the league, not national teams.
How does a season work?
A double round-robin means playing every opponent twice, once at home and once away. Results accumulate towards a league position, unlike a knockout format in which a tie determines which team advances.
The number of clubs, rounds and relegation places must be checked for the relevant season. One year’s structure should not be treated as a permanent rule.
The 2026/27 rules
This section refers to the regulations issued by VPF on 26 August 2026, checked on 7 September 2026. There are 14 clubs playing a double round-robin. Each meets 13 opponents twice, giving 26 matches per club and a competition comprising 26 rounds and 182 matches.
A win earns three points, a draw one and a loss none. Under this season’s rules, the clubs finishing 13th and 14th are relegated to the 2027/28 First Division. Exceptional cases remain subject to decisions by the competition authorities.
Reading points and positions
Distinguish matches played, points, goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference. Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded; it is not a points total. Teams level on points may have played different numbers of matches.
For the provisional 2026/27 table after each round, points come first. Tied teams are then compared on overall goal difference, goals scored and away goals from matches played. If still equal, they share a rank and are displayed alphabetically by club name.
The final table uses a different sequence. Teams level on points are first compared on their matches against each other: points, goal difference, goals scored and away goals. If a subset remains tied, the process is reapplied to matches involving those still-equal teams.
If head-to-head comparisons cannot separate them, the next criteria are overall goal difference, goals scored and away goals, followed by disciplinary points, with fewer disciplinary points ranking higher. Drawing lots follows if necessary. For two clubs still tied where a medal or relegation position is at stake, the regulations provide for an additional match instead of drawing lots. It is therefore inaccurate to say that every points tie always starts with head-to-head results.
Worked examples
Suppose team A records two wins, one draw and one loss: 2 × 3 + 1 × 1 = 7 points. Three wins and one loss give team B nine points. These are hypothetical examples without points deductions or revised results.
If A and B are level on points in the provisional table but A has the better goal difference, B’s earlier win over A does not by itself put B above A. At season’s end, the final-ranking provisions must be applied instead of carrying over this simplified provisional-table example.
