Arsenal are appealing the straight red card Max Dowman received late in their Carabao Cup fourth-round defeat at Fleetwood Town on 27 October. According to Sky Sports, the club must submit the appeal documents by 1pm UK time on 29 October (8pm in Vietnam) and hope for a decision before their Premier League match at Liverpool on 1 November, although the timing of the process is in the hands of the Football Association.
The stakes are significant. If the appeal fails, The Guardian reports, Dowman will serve a three-match domestic suspension and miss the trip to Anfield as well as games against Hull and Newcastle. Bongda24h, citing Standard Sport, also put the ban at three matches.
Was it a red card?
Dowman was dismissed for violent conduct after kicking out at Harrison Neal following the Fleetwood defender's strong challenge on him, Sky Sports reported. At 16 years and 300 days, he became the youngest player sent off in a League Cup match, according to The Guardian.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher does not expect Arsenal to win. Asked by Sky Sports whether the appeal would succeed, he said: "I don't, because of the aggressiveness of Dowman, and you can see the intent. I think it will fail." Gallagher added that Neal's tackle should also have brought a free-kick and a yellow card: "It's a reckless challenge and he's had little regard to the safety of Dowman."
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson disagreed with the dismissal. He said: "In my opinion, it wasn't a red card." The Guardian argued there was minimal force when Dowman lifted his right knee towards Neal and that referee Michael Salisbury could have booked both players instead. Speaking straight after the game, Arteta told Sky Sports: "I haven't seen it with the camera." Former MK Dons manager Karl Robinson praised the club's decision to appeal.
Arteta's touchline reaction
As Dowman walked past the dugouts towards the tunnel, Arteta leaned in and said something to him. Asked about it, the Arsenal manager replied: "It was something that we discussed before the game." He refused to go into more detail, according to Sky Sports.
Merson said Arteta should have put an arm around a 16-year-old with the score still 1-1, and fellow pundit Jobi McAnuff added: "I didn't like the reaction at all." The Guardian suggested Arteta may come to regret such a public admonishment, but noted that part of his frustration was that Dowman took the bait, and that opponents will now try even harder to provoke him. Arteta compared the teenager's situation with Bukayo Saka's early years: "Very similar to Bukayo in the beginning as well."
A rapid rise
Our timeline, compiled from The Guardian and Sky Sports:
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 2025 | Becomes the first 15-year-old to play in the Champions League |
| March 2026 | Breaks the Premier League youngest-scorer record against Everton |
| September 2026 | Scores twice against Ipswich in the Carabao Cup third round |
| Before the Fleetwood tie | Sent off for England Under-19s against the USA |
| 27 October 2026 | Sent off at Fleetwood aged 16 years and 300 days |
| 29 October 2026 | Appeal deadline, 1pm UK time |
The timing is awkward for Arsenal. The Guardian reports that Bukayo Saka's thigh injury is expected to keep him out for several weeks and that Noni Madueke did not travel to Fleetwood because of an ankle issue, which had opened the door to more Premier League minutes for the Hale End academy graduate, who has trained with the first team since he was 14. Sky Sports also noted that Arsenal put 19 shots off target at Fleetwood, with Kai Havertz missing three or four big chances.
What comes next
Arsenal must lodge their paperwork by 1pm UK time on 29 October, after which the FA will set the timetable for a ruling. If the red card stands, Dowman will miss the game at Anfield on 1 November and the following matches against Hull and Newcastle, according to The Guardian. Whatever the verdict, the bigger test for the teenager will be handling the extra scrutiny that is now coming his way.
