Vietnam's volleyball federation has begun preparing its plan for the 2027 national championship, while the precise competition format remains under review, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng (SGGP) reports. The 2027 regulations had not been issued when the article was published.
The newspaper describes a basic direction of two rounds for both men's and women's teams leading to finals. The arrangement of matches and the method for determining the later stages remain to be settled.
Comparing the last two seasons
SGGP says the championship was reduced to eight men's and eight women's teams from 2025. In the 2025 format, each team played seven group matches: five in the first phase and two in the second. Results also determined places in the semi-final race and the group contesting survival.
In 2026 each team had 14 group matches, seven in each phase. That doubled the regular group schedule described by the newspaper. SGGP argues that each system presented a different problem: too few matches in 2025, and some outcomes becoming clear early in 2026 despite the increase.
What remains open
The report describes a desire among volleyball specialists for a stable format that can work over several seasons. It also mentions discussion of a season running from the end of one calendar year into the start of the next, while stating that such a proposal has not been approved.
The federation issues the competition regulations. Until its 2027 document is published, the match count, qualification method and detailed calendar remain subject to confirmation. SGGP also notes that in 2026 a team with a poor group record could still stay up by winning its final deciding match.
