Five countries in a 12-event programme
The 2026 Southeast Asian fencing championship has opened in Quảng Ninh, bringing together nearly 200 athletes from Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia. Coaches, delegation members, representatives of international and regional fencing organisations and international referees are also attending.
The near-200 figure refers to athletes, rather than every person travelling with the teams. The programme comprises 12 events: six individual and six team competitions for men and women across sabre, foil and épée. Competition continues until October 23, 2026.
Organisers say experienced international competitors are taking part, offering opportunities to improve technical standards and gain experience. The opening report does not establish medal winners or completed results for all the categories.
Organisational priorities
The event is intended to strengthen regional sporting exchanges, promote fencing and showcase local culture and tourism. Quảng Ninh culture, sports and tourism deputy director Nguyễn Thanh Tùng called on athletes to follow the rules and competition regulations while maintaining honesty, sportsmanship and solidarity.
Referees were asked to officiate fairly, accurately and objectively. Supporting committees were directed to coordinate event operations, security, medical provision and arrangements at competition venues and delegation accommodation.
These are responsibilities for managing the championship as it proceeds. The stated October 23 finish remains part of its calendar, rather than proof that the 12 competitions had already been decided when the opening announcement was published.
