Gian Piero Gasperini has opened the possibility of using Santiago Castro and Donyell Malen together in Roma's attack. After the win over Genoa, he said Castro could replace Malen but that there would also be occasions when both could play.
The comments introduce an option before the Slovan Bratislava fixture, rather than confirming a two-striker starting lineup.
Two alternatives could become a partnership
Gasperini has generally selected one of the pair in the early part of the season. Malen has usually started, with Castro beginning the Genoa match while the Dutch forward was suspended.
Malen's eight goals in eight games make him difficult to leave out. Castro's recent goal and renewed match rhythm provide another reason to consider a larger role for him.
The coach described Castro as a centre-forward and reiterated his confidence in the player's ability and potential. Although the two attackers have mainly been alternatives, he does not rule out combining them.
Personnel creates room for an option
Paulo Dybala remains injured, while Mora made limited impact against Genoa. The report considers whether that situation could encourage a different attacking arrangement.
One proposed structure places Malen towards the right, Castro towards the left and an attacking midfielder behind them. Mora, Soulé and Pellegrini are mentioned as options for the supporting role against Slovan's usual 4-1-4-1.
That is a tactical possibility based on the available personnel. Whether Gasperini uses it immediately or in a later match remains a selection decision rather than an established change.
