Ha Long Bay is joining the global IRONMAN 70.3 network with an inaugural event planned for March 21, 2027. SGGP The Thao reported the November 2 announcement as the addition of a northern Vietnamese coastal destination for domestic and international athletes.

A destination for competitors and companions

The bay’s limestone formations, islands and seascape form the setting highlighted in the launch. It first received UNESCO World Natural Heritage recognition in 1994, providing a cultural and geographical backdrop to the new event.

Michelle Pepper, managing director for Asia Pacific at the Ironman Group, welcomed the prospect of bringing the international athlete community to Ha Long. She identified its distinctive limestone scenery, local culture and hospitality as features of the experience for competitors, families and friends.

The programme presented in the report extends beyond competition to exploring the bay, trying local food and visiting other attractions in Quang Ninh and northern Vietnam. The destination approach therefore includes people accompanying athletes, giving the travelling group shared activities around the sporting event.

Three disciplines over 113 kilometres

The announced challenge comprises a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km cycle and a 21.1 km run. Together they total 113 km, equivalent to the 70.3 miles reflected in the series name. Cycling accounts for most of the distance within that three discipline structure.

Following the launch announcement, the inaugural edition is the next stage in bringing Ha Long into the network’s competition programme. It is intended to welcome Vietnamese and overseas athletes while connecting their sporting visit with the bay and the wider region’s cultural and tourism experiences.
