A prolonged run of selling

The report put the day's sales at about VND2.1 trillion and purchases below VND1.4 trillion. It described the streak as the longest since late October 2024, when foreign investors sold for 21 consecutive sessions with a total of roughly VND21 trillion.

Citing Ho Chi Minh City exchange data, VnExpress said year-to-date net withdrawals were approximately VND116 trillion. Foreign ownership on that exchange was around 13%, compared with 15% a year earlier. The daily, streak and year-to-date figures cover different periods and should not be combined.

Forecast inflows remain uncertain

VNDirect's Đinh Quang Hinh linked some selling to profit-taking and portfolio restructuring after investors had positioned for market-upgrade news. Other analysts cited opportunity costs and international capital moving towards markets with stronger perceived earnings prospects.

SSI estimated that passive funds tracking FTSE indices could invest about US$2.7 billion in 2027. That remains an estimate, not completed or guaranteed buying. The VN-Index closed near 1,704 on 14 October after six consecutive declines. Subsequent trading and the implementation of upgrade-related investment schedules will provide the next evidence on whether foreign flows change direction.
