The Los Angeles Lakers assigned Bronny James to their G League affiliate, the Coachella Valley Lakers, according to an Associated Press report published by NBA.com. First-round pick Cameron Carr was assigned alongside him.

James has moved between the NBA team and its affiliate throughout his three-year career. AP described the move as an assignment; its report did not announce a release or trade.

Limited NBA minutes

At the time of the report, James had appeared in five games in the 2026-27 season, averaging 2.4 minutes and 0.8 points. The Lakers had started 7-2, and AP said the guard had mainly played late minutes in games whose outcome was already settled.

James had appeared in 74 NBA games over three seasons, according to AP. The Lakers retained him after his father, LeBron James, left for the Philadelphia 76ers in the summer. An assignment gives both James and Carr a place in the affiliate's playing schedule while they remain connected to the Lakers organisation.

The G League setting

James averaged 18.4 points and 4.4 assists in the G League over the previous two seasons, AP reported. Those figures describe his time at the development level, not his NBA averages for the current campaign.

Coachella Valley moved its home games this season from the Lakers' training complex in El Segundo to Acrisure Arena near Palm Springs. The affiliate was preparing to open its regular season, while the NBA Lakers were scheduled to host Portland. The two schedules are separate, and participation in any particular game depends on the team lists at that time.
