Lucy Liu and Eloise Singer are preparing an international tour for The Pirate Queen: No Safe Waters in 2027. Singer told Variety that the collaborators have also co-written a graphic novel and are developing a new game, extending their retelling of pirate leader Cheng Shih's story.
Moving beyond the original headset experience
No Safe Waters appeared in the Cannes Film Festival's Immersive Competition in 2026. Liu narrates and produces alongside writer-director Singer.
It follows the 2024 virtual-reality version of The Pirate Queen, which received an Emmy nomination. The newer work uses projection, sound and movement in a shared room rather than an individual headset. Audiences stand within a setting of storms, fleets and moving imagery.
Liu said voice in an immersive project helps guide atmosphere and audience movement. As a producer, she also wants to protect the story's integrity as it develops into a larger creative world.
Building a connected storyworld
Singer has worked on The Pirate Queen for a decade, including the last three years with Liu. She described the different formats as opportunities to offer audiences distinct experiences within the same story.
On November 4, BAFTA selected Singer for its UK Breakthrough programme in the games category for No Safe Waters. Netflix supports the initiative for emerging screen-industry talent.
Singer said distribution interest had strengthened her confidence in a sustainable future for immersive storytelling. The team is now preparing the international tour while continuing the graphic-novel expansion and development of a new game.
