Mackenyu has been cast as Mash Burnedead in a live-action film based on Hajime Komoto’s manga Mashle. Tuoi Tre, citing Oricon, reported that Yuichi Fukuda is directing the adaptation, with a Japanese release scheduled for March 19, 2027. The first images show Mackenyu wearing the Easton magic school uniform and the character’s distinctive haircut.

Building a performance around action

Mackenyu said he began training after accepting the role and spent about three years preparing before filming. Mash counters magic with physical strength, and the actor wanted his build to be convincing to readers familiar with the character. A second challenge was conveying the emotions of a character who rarely shows them. Mackenyu described relying on action and physical expression for that part of the performance.

Fukuda said he thought of Mackenyu for the lead soon after securing the adaptation rights. He recalled being impressed by the actor’s preparation when they met before the first day of filming. Komoto also described his surprise at seeing the physical transformation on set.

The story behind the adaptation

Mashle ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from January 2020 to July 2023. It follows a boy without magical ability in a society that assigns status through magic. He uses strength to challenge that system and pursue the title of Divine Visionary. The manga has since been adapted for anime and expanded into books, stage productions and games. Fukuda’s film brings the premise to cinemas, with the first costume images and the planned Japanese date marking the initial public rollout.
