Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth on 25 October, a Premier League round-eight defeat on the day Michael Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the whole match. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored for the visitors at Old Trafford. According to VnExpress, United are now eight games without a win in all competitions and have slipped to 16th with 7 points from eight matches, which Thanh Niên notes is only 1 point above the relegation places.

Errors behind every goal

All three goals grew out of United mistakes. The Guardian and Bongdaplus both trace the opener to a foul by centre-back Ayden Heaven, one the Guardian called needless. From the free-kick, in the 38th minute, Justin Kluivert found Rayan unmarked at the back post and he volleyed past Senne Lammens, VnExpress reports.

Shortly before half-time Leny Yoro slipped near his own box, Adrien Truffert pounced and squared for Tavernier to tap into an empty net. Bongda24h notes that both goals came within a five-minute spell late in the half, and Old Trafford booed the team off at the interval.

Carrick hooked Youri Tielemans, the player picked to fill the Fernandes role, at half-time and sent on Matheus Cunha. It made little difference. Evanilson had an early second-half goal disallowed, according to Bongda24h, and VnExpress counts two further clear chances that Rayan spurned. The third goal arrived anyway: Evanilson chased a long ball, rounded Lammens as the goalkeeper charged out of his area and finished from a tight angle into the empty net.

Even at 3-0 down, Carrick did not turn to his captain. The Guardian points out that academy graduate Shea Lacey was sent on instead. United finished with 17 shots and no goals; Bournemouth had 10, five of them from Rayan, per Bongda24h.

Why benching Fernandes was such a gamble

Fernandes lost his place days after publicly criticising Carrick's tactics following the 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. The Premier League's official website reports that Carrick insisted it was a "pure football" decision. Harry Maguire took the armband, with Mason Mount and Tielemans asked to supply the creativity.

The numbers show how much United lean on their captain:

  • Bongda24h says it was only the sixth Premier League match Fernandes has not started, and the first since May 2025.
  • VnExpress and Bongda24h both note that United have won just one of their last 11 league games without Fernandes in the starting line-up, drawing three and losing seven.
  • Since Carrick's first game in charge in January, Fernandes has more assists (14) and has created more chances (96) than any player in Europe's big-five leagues, according to the Premier League.
  • The same source points out that Bryan Mbeumo was the only United starter who had scored a Premier League goal for the club in 2026.

The stand-in did not help his case. The Guardian describes Tielemans repeatedly losing the ball against Bournemouth's press, with a first-half booking his most notable contribution.

Bournemouth's Old Trafford habit

This was not a one-off. Compiled from VnExpress, Bongda24h and the Premier League:

December 2024Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth
25 October 2026Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth

According to the Premier League, it was Bournemouth's third win by three or more goals at Old Trafford in the competition; since 1992/93 only Liverpool, with four, have managed it more often. Bongda24h adds that the Cherries have scored 18 goals in 10 Premier League visits to United, an average of 1.8 goals per game, and are only the third side to score at least twice on four consecutive league trips there, after Manchester City (2011/12 to 2014/15) and Brighton (2022/23 to 2025/26).

For United, 7 points from eight games (one win, four draws, three defeats) is their worst return at this stage since 1986/87, when they had 4 points, Bongda24h notes. It was also their heaviest home league defeat since the 3-0 loss to the same opponents in December 2024.

Marco Rose's side arrived in good spirits after beating AC Milan 3-0 in midweek, per the Premier League, and Junior Kroupi came off the bench for his first minutes of 2026/27. VnExpress notes that Bournemouth only recorded their first league win of the season in the previous round; they are now 13th on 10 points.

Pressure on Carrick

Carrick admitted afterwards that he did not know what would happen next, and said he would always do what was best for the club, Thanh Niên reports. VnExpress describes fans singing his name as he applauded them, before turning their boos on the players, with much of the anger aimed at the owners and football director Jason Wilcox. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was blunter about the squad: "So, this is a pattern of nothings, of players switching off and downing tools." The background to the week, from dressing-room friction to the names linked with Carrick's job, is in our Man Utd pre-Bournemouth preview.

What's next

There is little respite. According to the Premier League, United travel to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in round nine on Saturday 31 October, then host Aston Villa before a trip to Liverpool. Carrick's future rests with the club's hierarchy, which had not announced a decision when the post-match reports were published.
