Maxime Esteve is using detailed preparation while awaiting a Champions League opportunity with RB Leipzig. In a Sky Sports interview, the 24-year-old defender recalled scoring two own goals against Manchester City for Burnley and how he rebuilt confidence afterwards.

Support after a difficult experience

Esteve moved from Burnley to Leipzig in the summer. He was on the bench for their first two Champions League matches and is still hoping to make his debut in the competition.

After the own-goal game, Scott Parker showed him examples of his positive work rather than concentrating only on the errors. Esteve said that meeting helped his confidence.

He considers joining a club targeting regular Champions League qualification a step forward. He also recognises increased competition for places and the time required to adapt to a different league, club and culture.

Details behind defensive decisions

Esteve rates Erling Haaland as the best striker he has faced, highlighting strength, speed, heading and positioning. That is his personal assessment from playing against him.

He said a striker can have few touches but still demand constant concentration. His video preparation includes opponents' running speed, helping him judge the height and positioning of the defensive line rather than studying finishing alone.

He sees similarities in the energy and precision of former Burnley coach Vincent Kompany and current Leipzig coach Martin Demichelis, despite different playing approaches. His next step is continuing to integrate and being ready when selected; his wish to play does not confirm a starting role in a particular fixture.
