Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 at the Bernabéu on October 18 in La Liga's ninth round. Arda Güler and Yan Diomande also scored, helping José Mourinho's team move into third, six points behind Barcelona.

The result added momentum before a Champions League home match against Leipzig on October 21 and a visit to Barcelona four days later.

Güler and Mbappé establish control

Güler opened the scoring in the 30th minute, finishing first time with his left foot after Diomande's run and cutback. Earlier, Güler's contact with Peque Fernandez had been checked by VAR without a recommendation for the referee to review it on the monitor.

Mbappé doubled the lead seven minutes later. Diomande supplied the ball centrally and Jude Bellingham's backheel released the French forward, who beat the defence and goalkeeper before finishing.

Diomande rounds off his contribution

A second-half move beginning with Thibaut Courtois and continuing through Diomande led to Mbappé being fouled by Andres Castrin in the penalty area. Mbappé converted with a Panenka to make it 3-0.

Sevilla replied in the 80th minute when Lucas Stassin won possession from Mbappé and supplied Manu Bueno for a left-footed finish. Diomande restored the three-goal margin two minutes later, shooting from about 20 metres after a pass from Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Real extended their unbeaten La Liga run against Sevilla to 15 matches, including 13 wins. It was also their second consecutive four-goal performance after a 4-3 Champions League victory over Roma, providing a positive platform for the coming fixtures.
