NBA.com began its 2026/27 Rookie Ladder coverage by introducing lottery selections through comments from coaches, teammates and executives. The 14 October edition follows draft order rather than presenting a settled performance ranking. AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson occupy the first four selections.

Different teams, shared adjustment
Washington selected Dybantsa first, Utah took Peterson second, Memphis chose Boozer third and Chicago drafted Wilson fourth. Wizards veteran Anthony Davis praised Dybantsa's tools, willingness to listen and work ethic. He wants to offer enough guidance to help without overwhelming the newcomer. In Utah, basketball operations president Austin Ainge highlighted Peterson's intensity and maturity while recognising that rookies experience both progress and setbacks. These are attributed assessments, not guarantees about the coming season.
Development before final judgments
Memphis coach Tuomas Iisalo described Boozer's passing as advanced but favoured introducing responsibilities gradually. The nineteen-year-old still faces an NBA adjustment period despite his development. Chicago executive Bryson Graham similarly characterised Wilson's first year as a building season. He said the Bulls must allow for improvement and regression rather than immediately removing him after mistakes. NBA.com also states that rookies outside the lottery can receive recognition throughout the season through their performances. The opening article therefore leaves room for later developments and does not decide Rookie of the Year. Nor does a Washington number-four jersey, without an identifying source caption, justify assigning the pictured player's identity.
