Nguyễn Thành Duy’s performance at the World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo on 28 October has drawn attention to the Vietnamese 17-year-old. Tuổi Trẻ reported a 130 kg snatch, 166 kg clean and jerk and 296 kg total in the men’s 65 kg category, alongside praise in the IWF’s event coverage.
Keeping the record category clear
Duy competed in Group B and finished 10th overall on total. His 166 kg clean and jerk and 296 kg total were youth world records, not senior world records. The 130 kg snatch was his result, not a separate world-record mark.
He made clean-and-jerk attempts at 160 kg and 166 kg before failing at 170 kg. The successful lifts took his total through 290 kg to 296 kg. Those progressive steps should be distinguished from the two record disciplines.
The lifting took place on 28 October. Tuổi Trẻ’s 2 November article revisits that performance and the response to it; it does not describe a new record set on its publication date.
Progress versus projected totals
The article relays IWF writer Brian Oliver’s comparison with Duy’s 276 kg total at the 2025 Asian Youth Games, an improvement of 20 kg. An assessment that he could exceed 300 kg is a forecast, while a 310 kg figure for a December competition in Qatar is an entry total rather than a completed result.
A same-age comparison with Hampton Morris also involves different weight categories, 65 kg and 61 kg, and does not establish a direct ranking between them.
The Qatar competition in December is the next milestone mentioned. Actual lifts there, rather than entry figures, will show whether Duy extends his progress beyond Ningbo.
