Nguyễn Thị Thu Huyền won her opening women’s singles badminton match at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics, beating Zahra Robati of Iran in two games. Vietnam’s sports authority reported the 21–14, 21–15 result from the match played on 1 November in Senegal.

A useful start in a competitive group

Thu Huyền is Vietnam’s only badminton representative at these Games, accompanied by coach Ngô Trung Dũng. Sài Gòn Giải Phóng reported his assessment that she played steadily and followed the intended tactics.

The victory is an opening result, rather than confirmation of qualification. According to the format described by SGGP, the players meet once within each group and the leading player advances to the knockout stage.

Group E also includes Algeria’s Chiraz Halimi and Thailand’s seventh seed Kungkaew Kakanik. The women’s singles field contains 32 players, with Hong Kong’s Ip Sum Yau listed as the top seed in the report.

A first Youth Olympic appearance

This is Thu Huyền’s first Youth Olympics. She also served as one of Vietnam’s flagbearers alongside swimmer Dương Văn Hoàng Quy, while her competitive progress remains dependent on the group matches.

SGGP recalled Vũ Thị Trang’s women’s singles bronze at Singapore 2010 as a previous Vietnamese badminton achievement at this level. It provides historical context without implying a medal has already been secured in Dakar.

The published programme listed a meeting with Halimi on 2 November and a match against Kakanik in Group E. The final group standings determine qualification for the knockout stage.
