Vietnam's women's tennis team will play in Group II of the Billie Jean King Cup's Asia/Oceania zone in 2027 after beating Nepal 2-1 in the promotion play-off in Lâm Đồng on 25 October. According to VTV, this is the first time Vietnamese women's tennis has reached that level of the women's team competition run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The team also received more than 300 million dong in total prize money.

How Vietnam beat Nepal

The tie was decided over two singles rubbers and a doubles, VTV reported. Trần Thụy Thanh Trúc put Vietnam ahead, Nepal levelled in the second singles, and the doubles settled it.

The margins were tight. Thanh Trúc won the first set without dropping a game but lost the second in a tie-break before closing out the decider 6-4. Nguyễn Thị Mai Linh then lost both of her sets in tie-breaks, leaving the tie at 1-1. That put everything on the doubles, where Louise Natasha and Thanh Trúc won 6-4, 7-6. Thanh Trúc was the only Vietnamese player involved in both wins, while both Nepal players had to come back out for the doubles after their singles matches.

Final Group III standings

The play-off came on the final day of the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group III, which the Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) hosted in Lâm Đồng with eight teams. The closing ceremony was held the same day. VTV gave the final order as follows:

Before the event began, KBVN+ reported on Vietnam hosting Billie Jean King Cup Group III in Lâm Đồng.

Why it matters for Vietnam

For Vietnamese women's tennis, the promotion is a first step above Group III in the ITF's women's team competition. It also came at home: the national federation organised the event and saw its own team finish top of the table. And the play-off underlined how much Vietnam leaned on Thanh Trúc, who won points in both singles and doubles.

What comes next

VTV said that in Group II in 2027 Vietnam will face stronger opponents, a chance for further progress in international team competition. The report did not give dates, a venue, the other teams in the group or a likely Vietnam line-up for 2027.
