Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined £215 after leaving Portugal's training camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The Portuguese federation's disciplinary council announced the punishment on Monday evening in a 28-page decision.
The council did not specify the starting date. Sky Sports reported that it understands the suspension runs from September 30, when Ronaldo left the camp in Denmark. On that basis, the 41-year-old would be eligible for Portugal's November Nations League matches if Jesus selects him.
Dispute followed an unused substitute appearance
The disagreement began after Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo. Ronaldo said he had been told he would come on and had warmed up before the coach changed his plans. Jesus denied making the agreement described by the player.
Ronaldo subsequently missed the game against Denmark and the home match against Norway. Portugal won both and lead Nations League Group A4 with four victories from four games.
The captain explained his departure in a lengthy public letter, asked the federation to punish him and requested no special leniency. He later apologised and accepted that his conduct deserved a sanction. The disciplinary council considered the penalty sufficient for the offence.
Selection remains the coach's decision
Jesus said after the second Norway victory that the door remained open. That leaves selection for the next international break as a separate decision from the disciplinary timetable.
Ronaldo, Portugal's record scorer and appearance holder with 146 goals in 234 matches, has said he hopes his international career will continue. Portugal face Denmark and Wales next month, but the punishment itself does not establish that he will be recalled. Jesus must now decide whether the captain fits his plans.
