Erik ten Hag has alleged that Cristiano Ronaldo missed training sessions and failed to meet fitness requirements during their time together at Manchester United in 2022. The former United manager gave his account in an interview with The Athletic on 20 October.

The report says Ronaldo's representatives were sent Ten Hag's comments but had not responded by publication. The claims about training and dressing-room influence are therefore attributed to Ten Hag rather than established as undisputed findings.

Disagreement over physical preparation

Ten Hag said he had visited Ronaldo in Portugal to discuss his plans before taking charge. He described respecting the forward's career while believing that selection and discipline had to serve the team.

He alleged that Ronaldo completed only two of three running laps requested after the 4-0 defeat by Brentford in August 2022. He also claimed the player advised team-mates to conserve energy in training.

Their relationship deteriorated publicly when Ronaldo refused to enter the Tottenham match in October 2022. United and Ronaldo terminated his contract by mutual agreement after his November interview with Piers Morgan, in which the player said he felt disrespected by Ten Hag.

Criticism of club management

Ten Hag also accused United's leadership of failing to maintain promised support and communication after the 2024 FA Cup victory. He expressed disappointment over Scott McTominay's sale to Napoli, arguing that the midfielder offered goals and commitment.

United dismissed Ten Hag on 28 October 2024. Now FC Twente's technical director following a short Leverkusen spell, he said he still wanted Manchester United to succeed.
