Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died at 8am Madrid time on November 3, the club announced after he suffered a cardiac arrest during the November 2 match against Andorra. VnExpress reported that the 30-year-old was treated on the pitch and taken to Santa Cruz’s Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The match was abandoned with the score 2-2.

What the reports establish

De Miguel was pursuing a long ball in added time when goalkeeper Jesús Owono came out of his penalty area to challenge. The striker was left unconscious and players immediately called for medical help. Owono received a straight red card.

Citing Marca, VnExpress reported that medics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the ambulance. Tenerife initially said De Miguel could breathe unaided but remained unconscious in intensive care. The club subsequently confirmed his death. Accounts of the collision should not be treated as a final medical finding about its cause.

Decisions still outstanding

The Guardian reported that judicial proceedings were opened following a death not attributed to natural causes. It cited Santa Cruz’s chief prosecutor saying a court case arising from the in-game collision would be very difficult. An inquiry does not establish criminal responsibility or deliberate intent.

Football discipline is a separate matter. The Guardian described a possible suspension of up to 12 matches, rather than an imposed penalty. De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after playing for several Spanish clubs. Clubs across Europe offered condolences. Tenerife has requested postponement of its next two games, and Andorra has sought a weekend postponement; decisions on those requests remain the next scheduling issue.
