Vinh Long province presented the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation plan for the Dong Khoi Ben Tre special national historic site at an October 16 conference in Dong Khoi commune. Bao Van Hoa reported that the culture ministry had approved it under Decision 2413 on September 16, 2026.

The October event therefore announced a previously approved plan. It concerns places associated with the 1960 Dong Khoi movement and their historical value.

Different planning areas

The 9,000-hectare study area encompasses landscapes, communities and event locations across Dong Khoi, Mo Cay, An Dinh, Thanh Thoi and Luong Hoa. It is not a statement that all 9,000 hectares will be built on or acquired.

Priority components cover approximately 45.49 hectares, including the Dong Khoi traditional house, Dinh Nhon communal house, Rach Ong Bong victory location, Phuoc Hiep victory garden and the site where the Dong Khoi regiment was established.

A separate approximately 45.32 hectares is identified for landscape and tourism buffers, combining services with ecological spaces, orchards and residential areas.

Community involvement

The plan also outlines reconstructions of historical locations and appropriate investment in a victory square, parks, roads and supporting facilities. These are planning directions rather than completed works.

Provincial vice chairwoman Nguyen Thi Be Muoi called for a long-term approach, saying some historical locations had not been adequately preserved. The site received special national status in 2016.

Authorities called on communities to participate. Dong Khoi commune had already distributed planning information to agencies, schools and villages to support coordinated protection and presentation of the heritage.
