Andreas Almgren won the New York City Marathon on his debut over the distance, finishing in 2:06:01 on 1 November. VnExpress reported that the 31-year-old Swede became the event’s first European men’s winner since 1996.

A late move separates the leaders

Almgren and Yemaneberhan Crippa were still together as the race reached Central Park. The Swede accelerated with roughly 1.6 km remaining and finished 13 seconds clear of Crippa. Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo placed third in 2:06:26, one second ahead of defending champion Benson Kipruto.

Before moving to the marathon, Almgren’s results included a 10,000 m bronze at the 2025 World Championships and a world half-marathon title, according to the report. New York presented a different challenge through its bridges and changing elevation.

The result establishes what he achieved in his first marathon without requiring assumptions about a subsequent racing programme.

Chepkirui takes the women’s title

Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won in 2:24:36, adding to her 2024 victory. Jessica McClain of the United States finished second in 2:24:42, with Hellen Obiri another second behind in third.

VnExpress put participation in the 2026 event at about 60,000. The edition also marked 50 years since the route expanded across the city’s five boroughs in 1976: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.

Attention now turns to how Almgren develops his marathon career after this first result. The report did not name his next start, so any further progression must be judged from a future announcement and race rather than an assumed schedule.
