Michael Carrick expects a demanding Manchester United visit to Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday. In the club's October 17 interview, he highlighted both the opposition's quality and the intensity surrounding the fixture.
United took only one point from last season's two meetings. Daniel Farke's side also began this Premier League campaign unbeaten before losing 2–1 at Arsenal the previous weekend.
Respect for Leeds
Carrick credited Farke with building consistency after adjustments early last season. He described Leeds as dangerous and felt their performance at Arsenal had deserved consideration beyond the defeat itself.
He expects the noise, atmosphere and competitive intensity at Elland Road to test United. The recent Leeds loss has not changed his view of the challenge.
Carrick played there only once for United, in a 3–0 League Cup victory under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011. That memory belongs to his playing career rather than the forthcoming league match.
Seeking a positive response
This visit will provide his first experience of the fixture from United's managerial position. He said the players had trained positively and wanted to respond after their midweek disappointment against Atletico Madrid.
Carrick also recognised the growing support behind Leeds and the game's importance to the hosts. He wants United to remain united and compete for the opportunities available.
Sunday's kick-off is scheduled for 2pm BST, or 8pm in Vietnam. His comments establish preparation and ambition, without announcing a starting eleven or guaranteeing the outcome.
