Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord opened the fifth Jakarta World Cinema at CGV Grand Indonesia, Variety reported. The Palme d’Or winner leads a programme of 207 titles from 69 countries, including 102 films screening exclusively in theatres.
Opening film and professional exchange
Cinematographer Tudor Vladimir Panduru is the festival’s sole masterclass guest. He described Fjord as his third collaboration with Mungiu after Graduation and R.M.N., and their first production outside Romania and in English and Norwegian.
The film is Romania’s submission for the international feature category at the 2027 Academy Awards. A national submission is a stage before the final Oscar nominations.
The broader selection includes 120 titles that have won major festival awards, 96 Asian films and 41 directed by women. Twenty titles are national submissions for the international feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. These categories can overlap within the same programme.
Remaining screenings and future competition
Online viewing began on KlikFilm on October 6. The Jakarta edition closes on November 7 with Thai horror film Inherit, after which the programme travels to Bandung and Malang for November 14–21 extensions, according to a second Variety report.
Festival director Shandy Gasella said organisers aim to revive the First Feature Competition next year with an international jury. The category did not accept submissions this year because of difficulties assembling that jury.
Next comes the remaining Jakarta schedule and the announcement of short film prizes on closing day. The best short film winner is to receive KlikFilm funding for production and distribution of a debut feature, before the wider programme continues in the two regional cities.
