Practice incident brings an initial update
Stephen Curry left Golden State's public practice at Chase Center with a limp after a non-contact incident involving his right ankle on Sunday. Steve Kerr subsequently said the guard had told him he was fine, according to AP.
That account gives Curry's immediate response through his coach. It does not provide the findings of a medical examination or settle his availability for Wednesday's season opener at the Lakers.
Curry is preparing for his 18th NBA campaign at age 38. He agreed to remain with Golden State for two additional years in an extension signed the previous month. AP put its value at $116 million, which was $20 million below the maximum offered, and reported his intention to finish his playing career with the Warriors.
Recent injury history and help around him
The previous season produced 26.6 points per game for Curry, alongside 4.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals. Availability was a different issue: he appeared in only 43 games.
A right-knee injury kept him out for more than two months near the end of that campaign, including 27 consecutive games. Golden State then lost its play-in game at Phoenix and did not reach the playoffs. That knee problem is part of the earlier season's history, separate from the new ankle incident.
NBA's league-wide preview identifies rookie Yaxel Lendeborg as a possible source of support while Jimmy Butler recovers from knee surgery. The 24-year-old arrives with a college championship and Summer League MVP award. His expected contribution remains a preseason assessment as Golden State approaches its first fixture and awaits any more specific update on Curry.
