Matthias Jaissle accepted responsibility after Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Everton, with Thierno Barry scoring the decisive second-half goal. The Guardian reported that substitute Jacob Ramsey then received two stoppage-time yellow cards, leaving the hosts to finish with ten men.
Everton exploit the opening
Barry benefited when Lukas Hornicek failed to hold a shot from Tyrique George on the left. The striker put the loose ball into an empty net after a first half in which neither goalkeeper had been seriously troubled.
Newcastle introduced Yoane Wissa and Sean Steur in search of a response. Anthony Elanga subsequently met a Harvey Barnes delivery at the far post, but the ball travelled along the goal line without crossing it and Everton cleared. Newcastle's first effort on target arrived very late in the contest.
The result followed a 3-1 League Cup defeat against the same opponents. Sky Sports also highlighted Newcastle's difficulties building attacks, while Everton continued to threaten on the counter.
Fulham next for a side seeking confidence
Sky Sports placed Newcastle 13th after the defeat, four points clear of the bottom three. Its analyst Jamie Carragher criticised the side's lack of energy, an assessment of the performance rather than a prediction that relegation will follow.
Jaissle acknowledged supporters' frustration and identified confidence and possession as areas requiring work. For Everton, David Moyes praised his young team's resilience. He also said Jack Grealish remained absent for disciplinary reasons but had a route back into the squad.
Newcastle's next listed league fixture is away to Fulham on November 7. That match provides the next test of whether Jaissle can improve the connection between midfield possession and chances in front of goal.
