Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Thúy won bronze in women's javelin at the fifth Asian Para Games, recording a best throw of 12.16m across six attempts. Her 19 October result allowed Vietnam's para athletics team to meet its minimum target of one bronze medal.

Third in the combined classification event

Thúy is classified F54 and competed in the combined F52/F53/F54 women's event. Vietnam's sports authority reported that her distance corresponded to 469 Raza points.

Iran claimed the top two places. Elham Salehi won gold with 16.44m and 845 points, while Masoumeh Tourani took silver at 14.99m and 735 points. Kuwait's Malak Ali finished fourth with 10.61m.

Thúy's bronze was Vietnam's second medal on the first official competition day. Lê Văn Công had earlier earned silver in men's 49kg powerlifting, a separate event contributing to the delegation's opening results.

More athletics events remain

Vietnam's para athletics group includes seven competitors, one coach and one guide, with entries across 13 events. Thúy is also entered in discus. Her female teammates Nguyễn Thị Hải, Nguyễn Thị Kiều, Trương Bích Vân and Trần Thị Thúy Hằng have entries in discus, shot put or javelin across their respective classifications.

The men's entries include Nguyễn Ngọc Hiệp in long jump and 400m and Nguyễn Viết Đại in javelin and shot put. Most of the squad has international experience.

The Games run from 18–24 October in Japan. Vietnam has 21 athletes in five sports within a delegation of 36. Thúy's early medal meets the athletics squad's stated minimum while further competition remains ahead.
