Rio Ngumoha has become the youngest player in Liverpool's history to provide an assist in European competition. The winger reached the milestone at 18 years and 52 days during the Champions League win over Villarreal, according to Opta's Michael Reid, cited by the club.

Liverpool won 4-3 at Anfield, with Ngumoha directly creating two of their goals.

Assists on either side of the interval

His delivery from the flank set up Ronald Araújo to make it 2-2 at the end of the first half. Later, an incisive dribble and cross allowed Alexis Mac Allister to score Liverpool's third.

One contribution restored parity before the break, while the other added to the hosts' scoring in a match eventually decided by one goal.

Michael Owen held the previous club record, supplying an assist against Valencia in November 1998 at 18 years and 324 days. Ngumoha reached the same category of achievement at a younger age.

Another step in his development

Ngumoha made his senior Liverpool debut aged 16 in the January 2025 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley. That appearance established another club youth milestone before he continued gaining first-team opportunities.

A separate interview in the same reporting period records appearances in five of Liverpool's opening seven league games under Andoni Iraola. Ngumoha has also discussed adapting to the right flank and becoming comfortable on both sides.

The European assist record adds a defined achievement to that development, grounded in two chances created for team-mates during the Villarreal victory.
