Japan have reached the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup Morocco 2026 final after a dramatic 1-1 draw and penalty-shootout victory over DPR Korea. FIFA reports that an equaliser in the fifth minute of added time kept Japan alive against the two-time defending champions.
It is Japan's first return to the final since 2016. The 2014 winners secured their place in the title decider by overcoming the champions of the previous two editions.
A late equaliser survives review
Ri Ui-gyong put DPR Korea ahead in the 52nd minute with a precise half-volley. The defending champions were close to another final when Japan's pressure produced an own goal by Won Sol-gyong at 90+5.
Officials conducted a lengthy VAR review for a possible handball by a Japanese attacker. The goal stood, sending the semi-final to penalties rather than allowing DPR Korea to protect their lead to the end.
Goalkeeper and final taker deliver
Japan converted all their shootout attempts, according to FIFA. Kou Kadowaki saved Eh Chong-gum's effort and Kim Ju-gyong struck the post. Asuka Tanaka then converted the decisive kick to complete Japan's comeback.
Mashiro Yamaji was named player of the match. Japan coach Sadayoshi Shirai praised the collective determination of the players, substitutes and coaching staff, crediting their refusal to give up for the late equaliser.
Preparation for the final comes next for Japan. DPR Korea's bid for another title ends at the last-four stage after losing a lead held until the closing moments.
