Nicky Butt recalls earlier conversation with Carrick
Nicky Butt has recalled Michael Carrick expressing reservations about coaching before taking the Manchester United job. VnExpress reported the account from The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast on 13 October against the background of United's difficult start. It describes an earlier conversation, not a current resignation statement.

Why the United opportunity mattered
According to Butt, Carrick once felt the pressure of management made the profession unattractive unless the opportunity involved a major job such as United. Butt argued that a former player's connection with the club can make such an invitation difficult to reject, mentioning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roy Keane as examples of that emotional pull. He was not announcing new roles for either man. Butt and Carrick did not play together in United's first team; their contact came through Butt's coaching work at the club.
Responding to a difficult start
The report says Carrick returned in January 2026 after Ruben Amorim's dismissal and led United to third place last season. They have six points from the opening six league games this term, with one victory. A 1-1 draw against a Tottenham side reduced to ten men added to the criticism. Carrick nevertheless spoke about continuing the work and focusing on expectations within the team and club. He viewed adversity as a test of long-term commitment. The reported league schedule includes Leeds, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Aston Villa before November's international break. Neither that fixture list nor Butt's recollection confirms a decision to replace him.
