Jelena Ostapenko and Sonay Kartal have advanced to a Wuhan Open semi-final meeting after separate quarter-final wins. SGGP Sports reports Ostapenko overcoming Diana Shnaider, while Kartal defeated Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Ostapenko recovers from first-set danger
The Latvian trailed 2-5 and faced two set points before recovering to 5-5 and eventually a tiebreak. After a 6-3 lead became 6-6 in that breaker, she won the final two points.
She took control in the second set, winning the first three games and finishing the match with an ace after leading 5-1. The contest lasted 105 minutes.
The report counts 32 winners and 30 errors, illustrating an attacking performance with considerable risk. It brought her 27th win of the season and first WTA 1000 semi-final since Qatar in February.
Kartal extends her comeback run
Kartal's three-set victory over Svitolina follows wins against Anhelina Kalinina, Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini. The article lists her pre-event ranking as 170.
It also recalls her return after a long injury absence and a career ranking of 44 in July 2025. Those are different historical reference points, not a newly confirmed ranking after Wuhan.
The semi-final is scheduled for October 17. Reaching it does not establish a place in the final or a title, and any subsequent ranking improvement must follow actual results and official updates.
