Wayne Rooney argued that Manchester City should retain titles won on the pitch, even if stripping them could bring him another winner’s medal. The Guardian cited comments from Rooney, who played for the Manchester United side that finished second in 2011-12.

He said United had not done enough to win that season and that accepting a retrospective medal would feel uncomfortable. Rooney nevertheless called for severe penalties if wrongdoing was upheld.
