Six Vietnamese players are competing in the 2026 Southeast Asian chess championship in the Philippines, with individual medals at stake in standard, rapid and blitz chess. Sài Gòn Giải Phóng (SGGP) says the seventh edition runs from November 3 to 10 and includes invited players.
Vietnam's contingent comprises Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm, Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng, Nguyễn Hồng Anh, Phạm Trần Gia Phúc, Nguyễn Đức Hòa and Nguyễn Quốc Hy. They travelled after competing at the national elite championship in Cần Thơ.
An early standings snapshot
After three standard games, Nguyễn Hồng Anh had 2.5 points and stood second in the women's table described by SGGP. Nguyễn Quốc Hy was eighth in the men's section with two points. Both are intermediate positions, not final medal results.
SGGP notes that Bảo Trâm had recently won the women's standard title at the national elite event. Separately, Tuổi Trẻ cited Philippine newspaper Philstar in reporting that Mai Hưng won her first two games at the Philippines tournament. That two-round update does not establish her score after round three.
Three time controls
The standard event uses a nine-round Swiss system, with 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move from the start, according to SGGP. Rapid games use 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, while blitz provides three minutes plus two seconds per move.
The three controls make for separate individual medal competitions. The early standard standings give a view of the opening rounds, but the final positions and medals across all three formats depend on the games still to be played.
