Sydney Schertenleib sees Barcelona's first FIFA Women's Champions Cup as both a title opportunity and a chance to learn. In an interview with FIFA, the Switzerland midfielder discussed the 2027 competition in Miami and encounters with clubs from other continents.

New opponents, different styles

The competition brings together club champions from six continents. Schertenleib said that variety gives it a World Cup-like feel and allows Barcelona to measure themselves against unfamiliar football cultures.

The squad already contains many internationals, including Aitana Bonmati, Caroline Graham Hansen and Esmee Brugts. Even with that experience, Schertenleib believes opponents may offer ideas Barcelona can consider within their own game.

The 19-year-old moved to the club in 2024 and was on the bench for the 4-0 victory over OL Lyonnes in the 2026 Women's Champions League final. Barcelona have won that European competition four times.

Cruzeiro await in the semi-final

Barcelona will face Libertadores Femenina winners Cruzeiro in the semi-final. In the other tie, Club America await the winner of the second-round meeting between Naegohyang and the African champions.

Every final-phase match is scheduled for Miami's Nu Stadium. Arsenal won the inaugural edition in London in January 2026; Barcelona are preparing for their first appearance.

Schertenleib wants to challenge for a trophy Barcelona have yet to win and hopes the event can inspire young spectators. The next confirmed opponent in that pursuit is Cruzeiro in the semi-final.
