Türkiye have appointed Sergen Yalçın as national-team coach on a four-year contract, replacing Vincenzo Montella. The Turkish Football Federation announced the decision on Tuesday, bringing the former international midfielder into the role after a difficult run of results.

Yalçın, 53, takes charge with the team bottom of Nations League Group A1 and facing the possibility of relegation.

Results prompt a change

Türkiye lost all four of their Nations League matches, including two defeats by Italy. They also suffered a 1-0 loss to France and a 3-0 defeat in Belgium.

The disappointing sequence followed a group-stage exit at the 2026 World Cup under Montella, with defeats against Australia and Paraguay. The federation has turned to Yalçın in an effort to revive the team's prospects.

In its statement, the TFF wished him success and expressed hope that the appointment would benefit both the country and the national side. The contract establishes a four-year term, while the team's competitive response remains to be seen.

International experience and club success

Yalçın won 37 caps between 1994 and 2003 and represented Türkiye at EURO 1996 and EURO 2000. His playing career included two lengthy spells at Beşiktaş, as well as periods with Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray.

He subsequently coached a number of Turkish clubs, most notably leading Beşiktaş to a domestic double in 2020-21. His most recent post was a second spell at Beşiktaş before taking up the national-team position.
