Household deposits in Vietnam's banking system increased by nearly VND214 trillion during August, averaging roughly VND6.9 trillion a day. Central-bank figures cited by VnExpress on October 16 put the end-August total above VND11.43 quadrillion.

The rounded figure of almost VND7 trillion per day describes August's average net increase. It is neither a measurement of daily October inflows nor an average covering the entire year to the publication date.

Household savings accelerated

Household deposits were up nearly VND1.1 quadrillion, or 10.6%, from the start of the year. Across the five most recent months discussed in the report, net growth averaged VND175 trillion monthly, almost 2.4 times the preceding five-month average.

The article described competition for deposits and bankers' views that the interest-rate gap between dong and foreign currencies was attracting individual savers. Product rates and promotional terms vary, rather than applying uniformly to all customers.

Deposits from economic organisations exceeded VND6.34 quadrillion, up more than 2.5% from the year's beginning. Combined deposits from households and those organisations reached over VND17.77 quadrillion, an increase of approximately 7.6%.

Credit growth outpaced deposits

Outstanding economy-wide lending stood at VND20.49 quadrillion at end-August, up 10.2%. Credit therefore grew faster than the combined deposit measure described in the report.

Techcombank analysts said Treasury disbursement of public-investment funds could ease banks' funding pressure. They nevertheless expected deposit rates to remain broadly steady through year-end because of capital demand and inflation pressure. That assessment is a forecast, separate from the recorded August figures.
