Vietnamese rapper tlinh has released the music video for Người điên nặng, marking her return after three years, Tuổi Trẻ reported. The track reworks Người điên, a song from her debut studio album Ái, which the British magazine NME named one of the 25 best Asian albums of 2023. Both Tuổi Trẻ and Thanh Niên describe the release as the step that closes the Ái era and takes the artist deeper into her inner world.

A darker take on an old song

Where the original was soft and pink-toned, the new version digs into darker, more complicated corners of the mind, both papers said. According to Tuổi Trẻ, producer Machiot built the track on an afro beat with a denser, more dramatic layer of dark ambient sound. The lyrics confront desire, mistakes and self-inflicted wounds head-on, and redraw the lines between good and bad and between pure love and the urge to possess. Visual details such as a flower garden and certain costumes deliberately recall the world of Ái.

Thanh Niên said the video uses bodies to show inner conflict: tlinh is surrounded by dancers who twist, stretch, cling to and collide with one another. In one scene she digs into the earth as if excavating her past and facing emotions buried long ago.

Why the change

tlinh said that when Ái came out she saw love and life in bright colours, through feelings that were easy to love and accept, Thanh Niên reported. Growing up, she realised she also carried harder emotions, which Tuổi Trẻ listed as jealousy, anger, shame, a sense of not being good enough and feeling trapped by limits she had set herself. She said she previously lacked the experience and courage to talk about them for fear of being judged or misunderstood, but now feels ready to face those feelings and write about them more honestly.

tlinh's path so far

tlinh, whose real name is Nguyễn Thảo Linh, has more than 661 million streams on Spotify, according to Tuổi Trẻ.
