Appeal ruling as reported by Thai media

A regional appeal court in Khon Kaen revised the sentence of former Thai boxer Somrak Kamsing on October 20, according to Thai media cited by Tuoi Tre. Thai PBS reported a two-year prison sentence without suspension for taking a minor away from a guardian for a sexual purpose.

Naewna reported that the court dismissed an attempted-rape allegation because doubt remained. It also ordered an additional 80,000 baht in compensation, bringing the total to 200,000 baht. Co-defendant Pichet Chinehantha remained acquitted, as at the initial trial.

The revised conviction should therefore not be described as a rape conviction. Equally, dismissal of that allegation does not remove the separate offence upheld by the appeal court. The report indicates that further legal proceedings are being prepared, rather than presenting an unchallengeable final conclusion.

Earlier proceedings and further challenges

The case originated in December 2023 after a minor reported an alleged assault to police. Somrak denied the allegations. A trial court sentenced him in January 2025 to three years, one month and ten days after a reduction, and he was released on bail to appeal.

Following the new ruling, his side was preparing another bail request and a challenge at the Supreme Court. The complainant's lawyer also said the dismissed allegation would be contested further. These are intended legal steps, not completed subsequent judgments.

Somrak won featherweight boxing gold at Atlanta 1996, becoming Thailand's first Olympic champion. He competed at four Olympics from 1992 to 2004 and also won two Asian Games gold medals.
