At the Hanoi premiere of Bo sua bay on November 4, Vo Dien Gia Huy discussed the contrast that drew him to Quan. The character, a mob boss’s son, has a temper and takes part in action sequences. With his girlfriend Sang, played by Ngoc Xuan, he shows a gentler side, the actor told Tuoi Tre.
Character work within a genre debut
Huy said the role offered room to explore opposing impulses despite Quan appearing in only part of the story. The mix of action, dark comedy and fantasy gave him choices in how the character speaks and reacts. He recalled that the team had worried director Nguyen Pham Thanh Dat’s distinctive approach might narrow the film’s audience. Huy found the completed feature entertaining and said reactions at the first screening exceeded his expectations.
Bo sua bay is Dat’s feature debut. As a project it received the Kantana award at Busan’s Asian Project Market and a genre project award from the Motion Picture Association during the Asian Film Festival Da Nang. Nguyen Hung, Ngoc Xuan and Tieu Vy are among the cast. The Vietnamese release schedule lists early shows from 6 p.m. on November 5 and a nationwide opening on November 6.
What Huy hopes to play next
The actor said he wants to keep taking experimental roles alongside films made for wider audiences. After nearly a decade in the profession, he is interested in a sympathetic lead able to carry a substantial story or a distinctive antagonist. Speaking to reporters at the premiere, he said he expected audiences to see him in a project of that kind the following year.
