Nguyen Thanh Bao and Indonesia's Darjatno Hardjo defeated Doan Thang and Lam Huu Huyen in the third round of the ninth Cam Giang Cup doubles competition. BongdaPlus reported on October 17 that all three pairs featuring Vietnamese players had four points.

The xiangqi event runs in Chengdu from October 15 to 18, involving 32 players from eighteen countries and territories. The update concerns progress after three rounds rather than final medals.

Matching four-point totals

Thanh Bao and Hardjo won their opener against Hoang Hoc Khiem and Trang Hoanh Minh, then lost to Trinh Vu Dong and Lam Gia Han before their third-round success.

Lai Ly Huynh and Phuong Nghi, an Italian player of Chinese origin, also recorded two wins and one defeat. Nguyen Hoang Yen and China's Manh Phon Due reached the same points total through one win and two draws.

The report describes Thanh Bao's third-round opponents as highly rated players, making the result a notable part of the Vietnamese contingent's progress.

Cooperation without discussion

Both members of each pair control the same side on one board. They alternate moves in the required order and cannot discuss decisions during play. That format demands anticipation and tactical understanding alongside individual calculation.

The reported regulations provide seven Swiss-system rounds. After round six, the leading two pairs contest the title while the others continue for final placings.

Four points keeps the Vietnamese representatives involved in the race, but the remaining rounds must determine which pair, if any, reaches the championship match.
