Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 in a derby highlighted by Diego Gomez's spectacular strike from near the halfway line.

The Guardian reported that Brighton were three goals ahead after ten minutes. The result ended a four-match winless run against Palace and matched the club's 5-0 victory in the fixture from 1956.

Three early goals

Jaydee Canvot headed Pascal Gross's free-kick into his own net to give Brighton the lead.

After Adam Wharton lost possession, Olivier Boscagli found Gomez near halfway. The Brighton midfielder struck immediately, sending the ball over Walter Benitez and into the net.

Charalampos Kostoulas then supplied Yasin Ayari, whose finish deflected off Canvot for the third goal.

The opening spell left Palace facing a substantial deficit before they had established any control.

Brighton add two more

Kostoulas scored four minutes after the interval, following another attacking contribution from Gross. Substitute Jack Hinshelwood completed the scoring from close range in the 84th minute.

Palace had opportunities to respond, including a Jean-Philippe Mateta effort that struck the crossbar, but could not find a consolation.

Manager Pierre Sage apologised to supporters afterwards and expressed disappointment with his team's display. The report discusses pressure on his position but does not confirm any decision to replace him.

Fabian Hurzeler praised Brighton's collective work and togetherness. For his side, the derby delivered both three points and a notable historical scoreline. Palace were left to confront the defensive problems that had allowed the contest to become one-sided so quickly.
