Charlie Purdy has reflected on joining Arsenal at Under-8 level and earning a first-year scholarship during the summer. Speaking in the club's Young Gun series, he described the transition from Hale End to full-time life at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.

Purdy grew up around Tiptree in Essex and played for local teams before trials with Ipswich and Arsenal. He chose the opportunity in north London when both clubs offered a place.

Patience through the academy

He recalled successful teams at Under-12, Under-13 and Under-14 level, followed by more difficult periods and another U16 tournament success. As a smaller player, he felt he needed patience while continuing to grow and develop.

The scholarship meeting brought nerves before relief when the decision was positive. His parents and U16 coach Michael Donaldson attended.

Full-time training now requires a journey of about an hour and ten minutes each way from home, with a usual 6.30am start. Purdy says the routine has strengthened his resilience.

Learning around the first team

Opportunities to train with the senior squad have left him particularly impressed by Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice. Seeing fellow Hale End players Marli Salmon and Max Dowman progress also provides motivation.

Purdy recently scored his first U18 goal against Norwich after an injury-disrupted start to the season. His next ambitions are an early professional contract, UEFA Youth League involvement and possible U21 minutes. Those remain targets, distinct from the scholarship and goal he has already achieved.
