Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island topped South Korea’s box office for a third consecutive weekend over October 30–November 1. Variety, citing the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS service, reported $1.7 million and 221,651 admissions for the animated feature during the three days.

Leader and new challenger

Chiikawa played across 1,167 screens and took 32.1% of weekend revenue. Since its September 30 launch, the Kei Oikawa directed adaptation of Nagano’s manga has earned $20.1 million from 2,583,851 admissions. That cumulative result is separate from its latest weekend takings.

Heart of the Beast opened in second with $1.2 million and 162,790 admissions across 1,106 screens, representing 23% of revenue. Including business since its October 28 opening, it reached $1.5 million and 215,237 admissions.

Workplace comedy Ugly Duckling Ms. Maeng debuted third, earning $326,609 from 44,799 viewers. Following its Busan festival premiere and October 28 commercial opening, its cumulative revenue was $505,208.

A smaller overall weekend

The Assassin(s) ranked fourth with $307,719, followed by the rerelease Attack on Titan: Crimson Arrows at $266,616. Sixth placed Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub passed two million cumulative admissions.

Overall weekend revenue was $5.3 million, down from $5.6 million a week earlier. Chiikawa’s continued lead therefore came within a slightly smaller market, while Heart of the Beast supplied the strongest new opening.

The next reporting period will show whether the leading titles retain their audiences and how recent releases develop. These figures describe South Korean theatrical business within the specified weekend.
