Germany, Austria, Chile, Brazil, Norway, Australia, the United States and Iran reached the boys’ beach volleyball quarter-finals at the Dakar Youth Olympics after the 2 November matches. Volleyball World reported that top seeds Lasse Hüper and Filo Wüst needed three sets to beat Ghana.
Several qualifiers pushed the distance
The German pair defeated Justice Adusei Amoafo and Daniel Lartey 21–15, 19–21, 15–10. Ghana had already beaten Morocco in the lucky-loser round that day before challenging the reigning U18 world champions.
Australia also lost its first set of the tournament against the Democratic Republic of Congo, eventually winning 2–1 in 45 minutes. Iran needed three sets and 48 minutes to overcome Kazakhstan.
For the United States, Caden Phillips and Gavin Mortensen beat Türkiye 21–16, 21–12 to improve their tournament record to three wins and one defeat.
The American partnership and next bracket
In a separate Volleyball World interview, Phillips and Mortensen described playing together since sixth grade. Phillips focuses on blocking while Mortensen is a defender, and both credited their long partnership with helping their understanding. Phillips was also among the US flagbearers at the opening ceremony.
The quarter-final draw pairs Chile with Austria, Australia with the United States, Brazil with Norway and Germany with Iran. Qualification for that round does not yet guarantee a place in the semi-finals or a medal.
The published programme places quarter-finals and semi-finals on 3 November, followed by medal matches on 4 November at Saly Beach West. Those rounds, rather than seedings alone, will decide which pairs remain in contention.
