Elsinore leads the 2026 British Independent Film Awards nominations with 12, according to Variety. I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning follows with eight and Animol with seven. These are BIFA nominations, rather than award wins or official Oscar nominations.

Established names and first features

Simon Stone's Elsinore stars Andrew Scott as Ian Charleson during the period surrounding his Hamlet at the National Theatre. Its nominations include British independent film, director, lead performance for Scott and supporting performance for Billie Piper.

Clio Barnard's I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning and Ashley Walters's feature directing debut Animol follow in nomination totals. Effi O Blaenau and Queen at Sea have six each, including places in the British independent film category.

Directing debuts Extra Geography, Straight Circle and Florid received five nominations apiece. Mike Leigh's Tender Loving Care has three, including film and director, bringing different career stages into the selection.

The decisions still ahead

The gender-neutral lead-performance field includes Scott, Juliette Binoche, Erin Doherty and Jonathan Jules among others. Commentary about a wider awards season does not change the status of this specific nomination list.

Previous winners Jay Lycurgo and Posy Sterling announced the selections. Winners will be revealed in two stages: craft categories on BIFA's social channels on November 24, followed by the remaining awards at London's Roundhouse on December 6.

Those dates are the next milestones. A nomination lead establishes breadth of recognition but cannot determine how many awards a film will ultimately win.
