Godzilla Minus Zero earned JPY910 million on its first day in Japanese cinemas on November 3, Tuoi Tre reported, citing The Sankei Shimbun. Takashi Yamazaki returns as director, writer and visual-effects supervisor for the sequel, set two years after the previous film's events.

A project developed across two years

The production was first announced in November 2024. Its title was unveiled at Godzilla Fest 2025 at Tokyo Dome City during Godzilla Day celebrations.

In April 2026, the film received a dedicated presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Yamazaki announced production under the Filmed for IMAX programme, and the first teaser was shown there.

Screenings in New York, Los Angeles and at the Tokyo International Film Festival preceded the Japanese theatrical launch. The JPY910 million figure relates to that opening day in Japan.

A fictional reconstruction faces another threat

The story moves from the devastation of the previous instalment to a period of rebuilding. Within the film's fictional setting, a new threat disrupts efforts to restore ordinary life.

Ryunosuke Kamiki returns alongside earlier cast members, with Min Tanaka and Masami Nagasawa joining the ensemble. Yamazaki again oversees the screenplay and effects as well as directing.

Godzilla Minus One earned JPY7.65 billion in Japan and won the visual-effects Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, forming the backdrop to interest in its sequel.

Tuoi Tre lists November 6 as the Vietnamese release date. The wider rollout follows the Japanese opening as the new instalment reaches additional audiences.
