The club's official report credited Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter with two goals each. Substitutes Sjoeke Nusken and Maika Hamano also scored.

Spurs respond before the break

James opened the scoring in the 25th minute after winning possession on the left and driving towards the byline.

She finished powerfully from a tight angle, but Tottenham maintained their attacking approach.

Matilda Vinberg equalised in the 41st minute, heading in Julie Blakstad's delivery at the far post.

The teams reached half-time level after a competitive opening period.

Chelsea accelerate after half-time

Carpenter restored Chelsea's lead in the 58th minute following Alyssa Thompson's run and pass.

James completed her brace four minutes later, creating room for another individual finish. Nusken made it 4-1 in the 67th minute from Keira Walsh's delivery.

Hamano scored from distance in the 86th minute against the club where she had previously played on loan.

Signe Gaupset replied for Spurs a minute later, before Carpenter finished another Walsh pass in stoppage time.

Erin Cuthbert also made her first appearance of the season, coming on after around an hour.

Chelsea moved provisionally to the top of the WSL table at the time of the report, pending Manchester City's result.

The victory maintained their unbeaten league start, with Crystal Palace listed as the next WSL opponent.
