Lê Văn Công won silver in the men's 49kg powerlifting event at the 2026 Asian Para Games with a best successful lift of 171kg. It was Vietnam's first medal of the Games in Japan.
Successful opener secures silver
Công completed 171kg on his opening attempt. Jordan's Omar Qarada then established an advantage with successful lifts at 174kg and 176kg.
The Vietnamese lifter attempted 176kg in the second round but could not complete it. He increased his final request to 178kg in an effort to move ahead, but that attempt was also unsuccessful. His official best therefore remained 171kg.
Qarada took gold with 176kg, while China's Chen Liuxun earned bronze at 161kg. The distinction between Công's successful lift and his final requested weight is essential to the result.
Another medal in an established career
Silver improved on Công's bronze at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. His record includes gold at the Rio 2016 Paralympics and a 183.5kg world record set in Mexico City in 2017. He won bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Qarada was Paralympic champion at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, adding another major victory in this meeting between experienced competitors.
The Asian Para Games run from 18–24 October, bringing together approximately 3,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories across 18 sports. Vietnam's 36-member delegation includes 21 athletes in five sports.
Công's medal opens the delegation's account, with further powerlifting, swimming and athletics competition still ahead. It is the result of this individual weight category rather than a final assessment of Vietnam's overall Games campaign.
